Susie: “God is our superhero.”

*********

Jim was standing in front of the Sunday School class, helping Jimmy recite a memory verse.  The verse was: “For the Son of Man is come to seek and to save that which was lost,” Luke 19:10.

Jimmy: “The Son of Man is come…”

Jim, prompting him: “To seek and to save…”

Jimmy repeated: “To seek and to save…”

Jim: “Who?  Who did Jesus come to save?”

Jimmy: “That witch!”

During a conversation with the kids about God, Susie told me: “You can’t see God in this world.”

Me: “Well, that’s true you can’t see him, but you can see what God does in this world through his Son.”

Susie: “Like, if you wanted a Chick-Fil-A and Jesus built it for you?”

Birds Eye View

These warm-blooded creatures thought it would be fun to stick their heads out of the sunroof while we were waiting for the bus.  They’re always so excited to go to school.  I hope their positive attitudes stick around for the next sixteen years or so!

Brotherly Love

As Jimmy gets older and (slightly) more mature, he’s growing more tolerant of his ever-present little brother.  Their first year together was a bit rough, with Jimmy agitating Danny and Danny agitating Jimmy.  But ever since we moved the boys into the same room, Jimmy has taken a more paternal approach to his dealings with his brother, trying to instruct him on the various ways of life.  I overheard him this morning giving Danny the following lesson: “…Number Three, Don’t Bang the Table; Number Six, Don’t Break the Window…”  Jimmy likes to take credit whenever Danny learns a new word or concept, and Jimmy has been consenting to Danny’s daily requests to sit together in Jimmy’s crib.  I wouldn’t say they’re close buddies yet, but I think they’re moving away from the “adversary” designation and into more neutral territory.  This afternoon, Jimmy asked if he could “hold” Danny, so I sat Jimmy down and told Danny to sit in his lap.  Danny happily backed up and plopped down in as much of Jimmy’s lap as he could.  Jimmy wrapped his arms around him and Danny closed his hands over his big brother’s.  I quickly snapped as many photos of this rare moment as I could, since I didn’t know when it would happen again (especially since it was sandwiched between several shoving and shouting matches between the brothers!).  I pray that one day the boys will understand what a gift it is that they have each other – and how powerful an alliance they’ll need to survive the reign of their big sisters!

Aquarium Addendum

I know I already posted pictures from our amazing trip to Mystic Aquarium a few weekends ago, but our friend Stephanie just sent me her pictures from that day, and they’re so good I had to share!

In the first one, Stephanie pointed out you can see the reflection of Jimmy holding the door open to the penguin exhibit.  And I love Danny’s expression in the last photo.  I think he was either trying to use his sad puppy eyes to guilt someone into letting him out of the stroller, or he was thinking, “You honestly expect me to get excited by seeing a bunch of silly fish swimming around in circles?  How can I like anything that doesn’t have an engine attached?”

Boy’s Best Friend

Danny isn’t a thumb-sucker, he isn’t a pacifier-taker, he isn’t a blanket-hugger…simply put, he isn’t really a self-soother.  BUT, he’s finally found something that he loves: his brother’s stuffed puppy dog.  Fortunately, Jimmy was willing to part with it, and Danny has happily made it his new best friend.  He loves to bury his face in the soft fur and chuckle happily.  The puppy never fails to bring a smile to his face…and to mine!

Sleepyheads

Ever since the time change two weeks ago, getting the girls out of bed in the morning for school has been quite the chore.  Before the time change, they would bound downstairs, fully dressed, around 7:00am.  Lately, I’ve been shaking them awake at quarter past seven and then practically manually dressing them as they were too incoherent to put one foot in front of the other.  Of course, their illnesses haven’t helped (and as I suspected, Susie has pneumonia, too!  When she heard the diagnosis, she proudly skipped out of the doctor’s office and told everybody that she had the same sickness as her sister – I think she had been suffering from illness envy!).

So now that everyone is feeling better, I hope that tomorrow morning I’m not greeted by this scene (as angelic as it is).  Here’s hoping we can start this week off with a bit more energy!

Balloons and Bacteria

When the girls learned that this week marked the beginning of Spring, they informed me that we needed to have a party.  Never one to squash the girls’ willingness to celebrate, I went to the local Dollar Store and grabbed some spring-y stuff for them.  When they got home from school on Thursday, we hung a banner, blew up balloons, and set the table with our “fancy” plastic cups and paper plates they decorated with stickers.

We painted some spring pictures (you can see Danny really got into that one):

While we were still painting, Becky said she was tired and went upstairs to lie down.  When I went to check on her, she was sound asleep:

I took her to the doctor’s that tonight, suspecting something was up since she was feverish and had been battling a cold for the last three weeks, and it turned out the poor girl had pneumonia.  A few doses of antibiotics later, and you’d never know anything had been wrong.  She’s back to her normal enthusiastic self.

However, when we got home from Costco tonight, Susie was registering a high fever and promptly fell asleep on the family room couch:

Given that Susie is almost exactly following in her sister’s symptomatic footsteps, I have a feeling we’ll be spending our Saturday morning at the doctor.  I can’t wait until this Spring’s high temperatures happen outside my house, rather than in my kids’ bodies!
