First Day of First Grade

I’m happy to report that the girls were just as happy getting off the bus this afternoon as they were getting on this morning!  They both had great days, and were thrilled that they each knew at least one or two people in their classes. This will be their first year with separate teachers, and I can see I’m the only one that’s going to have a tough time with it – I’m already mixing up all the class paperwork!  The girls didn’t seem to be bothered at all by the separation, much to my relief.  I know Susie especially enjoyed her day, since she announced as soon as she got home that she is revising her future career track.  Rather than working at the company where her dad works (her original plan), she now wants to be a first-grade teacher!

Here they are this morning.  My girls are looking so grown up, especially when compared side-by-side to their picture from last year!

Just minutes before the bus arrived!  They can’t wait!

And since my picture of their backpacks didn’t turn out, here’s a picture of their lunch boxes: Hello Kitty and My Little Pony.  Hard to believe those same toys were popular when I was their age!

‘Twas the Night Before First Grade

The girls are starting First Grade tomorrow, and they couldn’t be more excited.  Really.  I don’t think it’s possible for two little bodies to wriggle/squeal/twirl/jump/leap/bounce more than they have today.  Which possibly explains why this video I took of the girls talking about tomorrow’s activities is so frenetic.  Their enthusiasm has rubbed off on the boys and they were all just bonkers!  So here’s my interview with the girls about how they’re feeling about tomorrow, including how they’re feeling about their new Frozen-themed underwear that Susie talked me into purchasing when we were buying school supplies today.  Below is a second video where I asked the kids all the same questions, but had told them that videos involving walking around/falling down/underwear throwing were not acceptable, so they needed to sit still and keep their new panties out of the picture!

Maryland Memories

Here are some of my favorite memories from our trip:

Having the kids entertain themselves at Pizzeria Uno’s amazing outdoor play area.  Why doesn’t every restaurant offer a giant pirate ship and elephant for my children’s amusement?

Spending quality time with Grammie and Grandpa:

Learning to fish, starting with stringing the lines to baiting the hooks with real worms and eventually catching a fish!:

Watching the girls play with their new Frozen dolls (and sporting braids that only Grammie can do):

Laughing at my husband making use of the two scooters our kids tired of riding:

Zooming down a mountain coaster and mining for rocks at The Wisp (while Danny napped in Aunt Sharyn’s arms):

Boating to Lakeside Creamery, no matter how rainy or dark!

Having the girls pick out their own beautiful stones at a souvenir shop:

Kissing the lake goodbye:

Enjoying a jaunt to Cabela’s on the way to and from Maryland, which helped the kids get their wiggles out:

Cabin Critters

We were blessed to be able to stay in the same house as we have in years past, so we made the most of the gorgeous dock, hot tub, and some new amenities like adirondack chairs and an arcade console.  And we had even more wonderful people to share it with – my sister’s boyfriend, and also my aunt and uncle from NC stayed nearby to visit with us.  We loved making new memories in this great place!

Notice Danny’s earpiece?  He put it on there to pretend he had a bluetooth headset like his daddy’s (it’s just a plastic buckle!):

Or maybe he’s practicing to be a gun-toting spy:

We loved getting to know Angie’s boyfriend Kevin, and the kids especially loved having another guy around to tackle!

We played lots of “ladder golf,” a game that was new to me.  It was so fun!

As always, we spent lots of time reading books.  My aunt brought a huge bagful of her grandkids’ books, and the girls eagerly found some new favorites!

Aren’t these darling shirts my Aunt had made for the kids?  They were so proud!

Swallow Falls

We recently had our yearly trip to Deep Creek Lake in Maryland with my California family, and we had a wonderful time.  Although we’ve been going for quite a few years now, we’d never been to nearby Swallow Falls until this trip.  We actually visited twice during our stay, once in the rain and once in the sunshine.  It was beautiful both ways!

Danny slept the first 30 minutes of our first hike, meaning I got quite the upper body workout!

Grammie and Grandpa make great hiking-in-the-rain partners!

Susie knows it’s important to wear brand-new dresses whenever you venture into the wilderness.  😉

Danny thought he was quite the expert hiker!

Driveway Surfing

 photo IMG_0907.jpg

So many things about this photo make me chuckle:…Jimmy’s hat and sunglasses and huge phone he insists is a cellphone, Susie’s nightgown she declares is a princess dress, Danny’s hands in response to my suggestion that he put his hands out like his siblings, Becky’s silk scarf that she stole from my closet and turned into a dress-up costume.  And of course, the fact that they’re surfing in my driveway!  I love this crazy bunch!

Monkey See Monkey Do

My little monkey sure likes to copy everything my big monkey does!

A Desk of His Own

Susie decided that her brother needed a space all to himself, so she created Jimmy his own “desk” in his room, complete with a homemade computer, box of tissues, and a pile of change.  He’s one lucky little guy!
