Becky made her own camera out of a tissue box: Can’t believe I used to take all my pictures using a big camera like that – now my camera fits in my pocket! I wonder what cameras will look like when she’s old enough to have her own! The other day, I needed Danny to stay put for a few minutes while I attended to something for our foster son. So I set Danny up with some paints and paper and then I left the room… (do you hear the ominous music playing??) When I got back, Danny told me I hadn’t give him enough paint, so he poured himself a little more. He said, “I wanted to do it more beautiful with a lot.” I guess big (and messy) is beautiful in this house! Now I know the next time I need to entertain a child, I need to evaluate whether the five minutes of playtime is worth the fifteen minutes of cleanup! Thanks to a friend’s generosity, we were able to join a whole group of friends for a fun evening of ice skating. I had no idea what to expect in terms of the kids’ interest in this freezing sport, but they all LOVED it!
Here’s a video so you can get a sense of how funny it was to watch the kids scootch across the ice! We met our friends for some time at the library and a hike in the woods a few weeks ago. It was such a fun morning! The boys came home covered in mud – a sure sign of a good time!
So here’s what a busy mom does when she needs to entertain her three-year-old for a few minutes… “Here kid – have some paper and glue. Knock yourself out!” Sorry there haven’t been as many posts lately. These days of caring for five kids are wonderful and overwhelming and exciting and busy! We also threw in a stomach bug into the mix, from which thankfully the baby has so far been spared. Our little foster child is now two and a half weeks old and we’re loving every minute of it. The girls wake up in the morning and come home from school asking to see him, Danny loves to help feed him and I overheard Jimmy making a cute little recording into his “smart watch” saying, “Hi. I’m Jimmy. And I love the baby.” Warmed my heart! So even though our days are jammed-packed, we’re doing really well! And even though I can’t share pictures that show the baby’s face, hopefully I’ll get some posted soon where you can at least see how adorably tiny he is, especially compared to the other kids. The little champ has stolen our hearts for sure! Susie wrote a letter to the Fish and Wildlife Department asking if there were any endangered animals in our area. She dutifully checked the mail for months looking for a response, and it finally came! She received a letter thanking her for her interest and informing her that there is indeed an endangered bat in our town! Here she is reading their letter in her “igloo”:
I just hope the bats we got rid of last year weren’t on her list – oops! The kids and I have been loving playing the logic game Mastermind together. It was one of my favorite games to play with my Dad as a kid, and I’m so glad my kids enjoy it too. I’m impressed how early on the kids are picking it up. Even Jimmy gets the concept!
Here’s Becky’s rainbow version of the game that she set up after we finished a match. Not exactly by-the-book playing, but very pretty!
After watching an episode of Chopped Junior, the kids and I decided to have our own mini version of Chopped. I set out a bunch of ingredients and told the kids to make their own dinner (see my ulterior motive there?). They were very creative, and they did end up eating their own creations!
