Susie is a natural-born chatterbox – I think I’m going to be seeing a lot more of this child gabbing on the phone in the future! (Isn’t the mirrored nook she’s sitting in neat? I love that spot!) If I have to ask why the kids are being so quiet downstairs…I’m probably not going to like the answer! Case in point: They made a “picnic” with my paper towels!
Susie, talking about baby puppies: “The babies burst.” Me: “What?” Susie: “They burst out of the mommy.” Me: “What??” Susie: “I burst…OK…I don’t know what I’m talking about.” ***** Jimmy, pointing to my cowl neck sweater: “That’s a funny hood.” ***** We were talking about learning our address, and Becky asked, “What if it was a-pants instead of a-dress?” ***** Me, prompting the kids: “Early to bed, early to rise, makes a man healthy, wealthy and…?” Jimmy: “Surprised!” Our gracious Pennsylvania hosts over New Year’s were our dear friends Ron and Tiffany. Their three boys and our kids got along so well Tiff and I were able to hang out and relax together (well, relax as much as you can with seven kids under one roof!). Our families went bowling:
Went to Red Robin (here are the kids playing Becky’s new favorite pastime, the “the dots and boxes game”): They jumped on the new trampoline for a few minutes until they were frozen solid:
Introduced the girls to the world of video games (they were enthusiastic learners):
Group coloring session: Danny and Wyatt hit it off: Although Danny was also perfectly content to entertain himself with Gavin and Mason’s extensive Hotwheels collection:
Our road trips were blessedly uneventful, thanks to Jim’s impeccable driving and the kids unending attention span for DVDs (interspersed with some sibling giggling): It was a great start to the year! I’m quite late with this post, but better late than never! Here’s our New Year’s Eve pictures from our trip to Pennsylvania. We had a great time ringing in the new year surrounded by so many loved ones! The kids did really well with the late night, especially considering we had just driven nearly eight hours to get there! Danny didn’t understand what all the fuss was about, but he was happy that good food was involved! And hats! Here are Becky and Susie playing with friends:
Susie with her beloved Megan and Lauren: Becky and the amazing Chloe!
And even though we didn’t get to see her until a few days later, we were so excited to see Sherry!
Here are some of my previous posts of our Pennsylvania New Years – including pics with some of the same people! See New Year’s Eve 2008, 2009, 2011, 2012, and 2013. Susie is very excited about her chosen future profession of veterinary medicine. Here she is bandaging up a horse: Although I’m not doubting her sincere love of animals, I’m not sure she’s cut out for the actual medicine part – the other day, as she stood at a distance to observe me applying a bandaid on myself, she gagged and declared the whole process “disgusting.” Maybe animal wounds won’t gross her out as much as mommy wounds! Out of all the kids, Danny is the one who started talking at the earliest age. We discovered a while ago that he is also the only one of us who is clinically tongue-tied! Despite being an excellent nurser from birth, I realized less than a year ago that Danny was unable to stick out his tongue like the rest of us- the tongue would only point down, and I could never see the tip of it. His pediatrician confirmed that he was, in fact, tongue-tied (a condition in which one has an unusually thick, short frenulum, the membrane that connects the floor of the mouth to the underside of the tongue), but said it was possible that it wouldn’t affect his speech. However, as time went on and Danny’s vocabulary increased tremendously, my ability to understand him wasn’t necessarily keeping up. We consulted an ENT who recommended performing a frenulectomy, which is a minor outpatient procedure where the surgeon snips the frenulum to release the front of the tongue. After much prayer and consideration, we decided to go forward. And so, last Thursday was the last time Danny’s tongue would do this (see how the end is slightly forked and points downward):
I bundled him up in the zero degree weather, complete with his beloved backpack holding a blanket, a toy puppy and several ATVs. Here he is at the reception check-in:
And here he is during the pre-operative procedure. He was so brave!
Both he and I held it together until the nurse took him out of my arms to bring him into the operating room where they would put him under general anesthesia – he started to wail, and I lost it! (I’m still tearing up thinking about it – those mommy/child separations are so hard, even when we know it’s in the child’s best interest!). But the procedure was over in a manner of minutes, and the doctor came out to tell me that the tongue tie had been more extensive than he originally thought, so it was a good thing we decided to get it cut. Danny woke up understandably cranky and miserable, and so I cuddled him in the recovery room as the kind nurse brought us ice pop after ice pop. Between that and the ATVs, we eventually calmed him down, even though he kept moaning, pointing to his mouth and saying, “Oww…my tongue hurts.” Poor kiddo! But we were home just over an hour after the procedure, and Danny and I cuddled the rest of the morning. It was nice for both of us!
And by the evening, thanks to his siblings’ antics and his Grammie and Grandpa’s balloons and his Bubba and Pappy’s new toy tractor, Danny was once again all smiles! (And so was his mommy!). 😉
