November 22, 2010, at 10:53 pm | Last weekend, we had the privilege of going over to our friend’s place for dinner. We had a wonderful time, thanks to our host’s generous hospitality and the company of dear friends. What made the get-together even more special were the cookies that our friend Beth made for the girls as a special treat:
The reason I got so excited about these cookies was the fact that they brought back oodles of holiday memories for me. My mom used to make my sister and I sugar cookies this time of year, using the same adorable cookie cutter. Just looking at these cookies made me long for the days when my sister and I were curled up on the couch with my parents, reading holiday books together, gazing at the lit Christmas tree in the darkness of our living room, or just enjoying each other’s company. I can’t wait to create such warm, wonderful memories for my girls during this holiday season. I don’t think I’m quite brave enough to attempt feats of baking, but I think I can manage a couch cuddle or two in front of the Christmas tree. That is, if I ever manage to find the Christmas decorations in the basement!
And even if the girls are too young this year to form many lasting memories, I can rest assured that they will still thoroughly enjoy whatever festivities or traditions we do have, just as they thoroughly enjoyed those holiday cookies!

November 21, 2010, at 11:02 pm | Here are some recent quotes from the girls:
Becky in bath to her Ronald McDonald toy: “No, Ronald, don’t pee. You need a diaper.” (At least my never-ending admonishments to refrain from peeing in the bathtub aren’t being entirely ignored).
Becky, pointing to a woman walking by us at the mall: “I see a mommy walking.”
Me: “How do you know she’s a mommy?”
Becky: “She has ears.”
Daddy to Susie after she recited a Bible verse: “Susie, how did you get to be so smart?”
Susie: “Um…I’m cute.”

November 18, 2010, at 10:56 pm | The following pictures may not look all that special, but believe me, I captured a rare moment in these frames.
I had been doing something in the kitchen when I realized all was quiet in the family room. I walked over to investigate, and instead of finding the silent chaos I expected, I saw Susie sitting beside the coffee table and Becky rummaging through a toy box.

While Susie contentedly played with a few toys on the table, Becky selected another toy, brought it over to her sister and placed it lovingly before her. Finally noticing my presence, Becky looked up and proudly reported, “I share with Suey!”

After recovering from the shock of witnessing my girls voluntarily sharing and playing together, I heartily congratulated them on their good behavior and watched as Becky repeatedly made the trek back to the toy box and, one by one, brought Susie the contents until the box was empty.
Of course, this brief utopian interlude didn’t last too long once Becky realized she was out of toys and now her sister had them all and was unwilling to return the favor, but I was more than happy to referee the ensuing conflict. I just kept thinking to myself, “My girls are growing up!”

November 17, 2010, at 10:47 pm | Some people are fair-weather friends; I am a fair-weather outdoorsman. That is, I don’t go outdoors unless there is fair weather. As soon as the temperatures dip down into shiver-inducing realms, I find myself reluctant to step outside unless I’m strictly dashing from a car into a building. Maybe that’s because I was born a California girl, maybe it’s just because I’m a wimp.
But I can’t say the same about my girls. Yesterday, we had returned home from the store on a wet and chilly day and I was unloading the groceries as quickly as I could so I could retreat to the warmth of our house. However, my plans were derailed when the girls re-discovered their toy ATVs that I had stashed in a corner of the garage (figuring our outdoor playing days were over for the season) and decided it was the perfect weather for driving around the yard. I was about to scold them for their insensitivity to the obviously inclement conditions, when I realized they weren’t shivering. They were having a ball. So I stood there, laughing, and watched them play. They were zooming around the driveway like they had just been released from a month-long jail sentence. I guess that’s what winter in New England sometimes feels like to me – an imprisonment. But I’m thinking that perhaps the imprisonment is much of my own making, by my hesitation to throw on an extra layer of clothing and just get outside for some fresh air.
And maybe, just maybe, thanks to the initiative of my children (and some good old-fashioned cabin fever), you’ll catch me actually enjoying some less-than-fair weather this season.

An indulgent daddy!

November 14, 2010, at 11:42 pm | These big guys are normally rather camera-shy, but it’s nice to know I can count on them saying “cheese” for the sake of the little girls!

November 14, 2010, at 12:06 am | We’re so excited that our friend Gabe came back up to Connecticut for the weekend for a quick visit. The girls have their playmate back!

…is a genius.

ABOUT US I'm blessed to be saved by the grace of God, loved by my wonderful husband Jim, and embraced by my twin girls, Rebecca Faith and Susanna Joy and my sons Jimmy and Danny. I started this blog in May 2008 when I was hospitalized for pre-term labor at 24 weeks gestation. The Lord allowed me to keep the girls inside until they were 34 weeks along, and on July 27th, Rebecca made her debut, followed by Susanna, five minutes later, on July 28th. We ecstatically welcomed Jimmy into our lives on April 25th, 2011, and Danny on August 31, 2012. This blog has been a personal journal of faith and motherhood and the only way I can remember which child did what and when. Thanks for stopping by to share in my Faith and Joy! Feel free to e-mail me at: [email protected].
