On a recent car ride, out of the blue, Susie announced she wanted pets…
Susie: I want a kitty and a puppy.
Me: You already have a kitty. Remember Tommy?
Susie: I want a puppy too.
Me: Sorry, kiddo. Daddy and I are already too busy to take care of a dog. We’re going to have the baby soon and he’s going to be a lot of work.
Susie (whining and near tears): But I REALLY want a puppy. A baby puppy!! I want a puppy for my birthday!
Becky (in a very maternal voice): Susie, you’re just going to get a baby for your birthday.
A conversation prior to the girls’ first swim lesson…
Becky: I don’t want to put my face under the water.
Susie: But Beck, just watch me. Like this (pantomimes dunking her head). See? It’s easy.
Becky: No! I don’t want to!
Susie: It’s not scary, Beck.
Me: Becky, don’t you want to be like a mermaid? Mermaids like Ariel live under the water.
Becky: No! No! I want to be a human!
Susie: Okay Beck, you will be a human, and I will be a mermaid. Deal?
Becky: What?
Susie: Deal?
Becky: What?
Susie: (Sigh)
