Aunt Angie – can you tell what photo from our childhood I was trying to recreate? It’s a work in progress. I’ll let you know what I get it just right! The last few trips we’ve taken, the girls have been asked to complete a “travel journal” to document their adventures. I was looking at the one they did after our Arizona trip, and I got a kick out of seeing what parts of the trip made the cut. It was a fun insight into their little minds! Note to self – kids don’t need expensive outings, just the great outdoors, sweets and friends! Here’s Becky’s version of our trip: “We went to a bouncy house slide.” (The girl is saying “AAA, this is fun!”) “We went to a train museum.”
“We went in the hot tub.”
“We had ice cream.”
“We got M&Ms”
“We went swimming.”
“We got donuts.”
“We went for a walk.”
“Jon gave me a blue rock.” (Becky is saying, ‘Thank you,’ and Jon replies ‘You’re welcome.’”).
Last week, we took our first family trip of the season to the bike trail. It was also the first time we’ve had four children mobile on the path, without the use of a stroller!
Boating hair, courtesy of the wind and sunscreen: I’m glad there’s a little lady who’s ready to assume my driving responsibilities! Meet Penny, our future captain!
Jimmy, pointing to a bird flying overhead: “Look, it’s a mohawk!” ******* Jimmy was poking at a worm in the dirt, and then I heard him say: “I broke him.” Me: “That’s too bad, bud. You need to be careful with animals. Tell him you’re sorry.” Jimmy: “Worms don’t say, ‘I forgive you.’” ******* I warned Becky not to come into the bathroom after her brother had a particularly smelly visit, but Becky insisted, “Don’t worry. I put my nose in the not-smelling version.” ******* Susie: “When I was little, I would always swallow my gum. But I don’t do that anymore.” Me: “Your brother always swallows his gum too.” Susie: “I guess little kids’ mouths are slipperier.” I don’t expect this post to be of interest to anyone other than immediate family, but since this blog serves as my only “baby book,” I figured I would document my recent trip down memory lane. I was going through some old children’s toys and books (many of which I hadn’t unpacked since our last moved, whoops!), and these few items loomed large in my memories of my kids early years. I know I’m already forgetting things about their childhood that I swore I would always remember, so I guess I’m feeling the need to write it all down while I can. This LeapFrog activity table was an awesome toy that entertained all four kids, occasionally all at the same time! This was the book that Jim and I read or recited to the girls nearly EVERY NIGHT of their lives, and we now recite to the boys before bed. It’s a simple little book, but it’s always ushered our kids into peaceful dreams. This book, a collection of stories written and illustrated by Eloise Wilkin, was a lifesaver for me during many hours of church. The girls would sit, enraptured by the beautiful pictures, and would give me a few moments of peace while I would listen to the prayers and preaching. I’ve brought the book out for the boys, hoping it will have the same captivating effect on them! (So far, no luck!).
And this book was the book responsible for turning Jimmy into a book lover. It was a chunky Thomas the Tank Engine board book we checked out of the library, and never checked back in because Jimmy loved it to smithereens. I don’t remember exactly how old he was when he finally started liking to look at books, but I think it was somewhere around 18-24 months old. I was SO relieved and excited when he finally started paying attention to all those books I was reading to him!
A dear friend of ours was suddenly hospitalized for health concerns. When I informed the girls about his condition, they got right to work making him a card. But one card wasn’t enough for such a special guy – Becky and Susie created hearts, a plane, and several get-well signs. We’re thankful that he’s recovering well, and we hope that the girls’ creations put a smile on his face! Here are my little artists:
And here is one of my delivery men, faithfully bringing the envelope to the mailbox (it’s not too hard to ride with no hands when you don’t have to do any pedaling yourself!):
Our love and prayers are with him and his family. We love you all! We took the kids bike riding a few evenings ago, and Jim decided to rollerblade alongside the kids. Jimmy was quite inspired, so today he dragged out his dad’s rollerblades to give it a whirl:
(Needless to say, Jimmy’s subsequent attempt at TWO rollerblades did not end well!)
No, I don’t typically make my boys wear helmets just walking around. They had just hopped off their bikes and followed their sisters to the swing set. I figured I’d let them leave the helmets on – it couldn’t hurt, especially when Jimmy jumps off the swing or Danny gets too close to the swingers! Danny will only sit and watch a TV show if he’s allowed to hold a remote while watching. He’s such a little man! |
